CARNIVAL OF TORMENT - THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY.....

Sketch and Poem by me.....

Humans star in Life’s carnival veiled in our disguises hiding our torment
Concealed from the immoral games others play; from their art of manipulation
Wearily with heavy hearts reluctantly we become accustomed to our discontent
Borrowed instances of happiness are only a momentary fleeting aberration

Lost in a murky mire of immeasurable despondency faces lost in the crowd
Innocent lives callously cast aside a counterfeit caricature of ship’s ballast
Wretched wanton descent to the dank dark pits of Hell having no buoyancy
Eclipsed by ugliness engulfed by hate with hearts hardened and callused

It's nought to provocateurs the damage caused by their perfidious evil deceit
Despairing sorrow and suffering envelop like a far-reaching grey shroud
Hearts are broken emotions confused Life is bitter when it should be sweet
Tortured souls - will we learn to breathe again or are we faces lost in the crowd

Helplessly plunged further deeper into a bottomless quagmire of oblivion
Like impotent leaves victims of a controlling wind our quintessence strewn
Impenetrable suffering feverish addiction making Life a fictitious illusion
Unrelenting oppressive incubus reckless incursion forcing Life into ruin

  1. Your poem and sketch are both powerful.
I hope you find some comfort, and brightness, soon.

    1. EC....I wrote the poem for those who are hurting at the moment...for those who unwittingly over the weekend became victims of the evil that is ISIS...

The sketch I did a few years ago...but it somehow seemed appropriate...

I hope the world finds comfort, love, peace and brightness soon....

      Thanks for coming by.

  3. Yes - tragic times we are having in the world. It's difficult to see the pain on the faces of the people of Paris.

Yes, and that pain extends to us all...to the decent people in this world. A heavy cloud of sadness hovers over us.

  5. Eloquently put together in these troubled times, Lee.
I think the Free World and those who have a conscience
should stand united and just say - "Je suis Francais".
I fear this may be just the "tip of the iceberg" but we must
stand firm and never cower to these infidels of horror and terror.

  6. Hi RK....perhaps tomorrow I will compose and post a happy, frivolous ditty, but today...that's not the frame of mind I'm in.

    1. Hello, River...each to their own...at least you've read it once...that's more than the majority of people in this world will.

Life is very sad...and we humans keep treading the same paths over and over again...

      Thanks for coming by.

    1. The world certainly is a sad place at the moment, Arleen, I agree...and being held to ransom by a mob of evil mongrels has to come to an end...sooner rather than later.

  12. Very good and the drawing goes well with the poem. Thanks for your kind words and uplifting comments. I agree with you astute view but alas it emotional wounds are worse because you have a sense of betrayal. I take my cue from Raffi from The Lion King movie "It is in the past, learn from it or forget about it." I also paint with a Ty beanie of Raffi on my easel and often have to explain his meaning. Peace

    1. Hi Miss Kitty...I hope you are feeling much better...and a smile once again is on your face. Some people get pleasure out of pettiness...that is their shortcoming, not yours. :)

Raffi's sentiments, in my opinion, are easier said than done...some things are not easy to forget. I wish they were.

Thanks for coming by...take good care.

  13. The bottle tree, if I remember correctly, was a import from the Kongo. The belief was the brightly colored bottles would capture the evil spirits and not allow them in your house. It's a custom more prominent in the South.

A normal bottle tree looks quite different from mine but that's what makes it mine, I guess. I just thought the first one was too dull. I had moved it to make way for my dragon project...mustn't get too cluttered...and it just looked Plain Jane. My mind took off from there. The decision to hang the bottle upright was simply a matter of balance. I only had a few limbs the bottles could stick on so by hanging them with wire I could basically put them anywhere.

I looked for colored bottles but could not find enough so then I jumped to clear and paints and glitter. One of those is a soy sauce bottle!

My mind jumped again! If it's a hanging tree...then I should hang more like a Christmas tree. My Fairy Stones had holes and are far easier to enjoy hanging than laying flat.

Then my mind jumped to the bucket of Dad's spark plugs I had saved when cleaning the shop. I could not throw them out (I'm thinking spark plug wind chimes now!) I carefully tied them and hung them too.

Now I have a memory tree, each piece has a story and I have mixed numerology in the hanging objects. That's a whole new ball game but I wanted seven, nine, and five which are all spiritual numbers.

And I guess that's the tale of how and why....Thanks for asking.

    1. Thanks for the explanation, Gail. I think you should start another bottle tree, using full bottles for this one...and during the summer months you could just lounge about under it...sipping at will. :)

    2. I carry my full bottles with me with fresh spring water and the springs are but a hop away.

You might be surprised at how much trouble I get into!

  16. I read the poem three times. It is crowded with words. Like a torrent. And it presents a view of the world that is the antithesis of "All things bright and beautiful". The vocabulary seems blunt, almost physical and the ideas are challenging - grabbing readers by the throat instead of floating away on wispy poetic clouds. The anxious face in the accompanying sketch seems to "fit" the poem perfectly.

    1. Hey Yorkie...events in this world seem to be rushing, crushing down on us like an endless, unforgiving torrent...I needed to release my feelings, somehow...I had to try to lift the heavy weight bearing down on me. Sadly the heavy weight bears down continuously on all of us...perhaps we should do as in the title of Ayn Rand's book..."Atlas Shrugged"...and shrug...I wonder if that would work.

How I'd love to float away on wispy clouds....poetic or otherwise...how wonderful the feeling would be.

      Thanks for coming by.

Your poem is beautiful; not everything should be all pretty and tidy. Our world, after all, is not. The sketch and your words fit the mood of the world perfectly. Thank you Lee.

  20. What has happened in France has been haunting me too in a way I don't think any of the other awful events have. I tried to write about it in my blog but I just couldn't. Your poem expresses it well. I don't want that bunch of sadists, misfits and criminals to succeed against those of us who don't agree with their hateful views - because everyone who doesn't follow their line is their enemy. It is hard to stand together yet not be aggressive back to them but I hope we can all do it.

  21. Hey Jenny...it would be wonderful to have the answers...to have the ability to change what is happening...but I think it has to happen - start within the Muslim world. Unfortunately, very few Muslims are stepping forward and putting their hands up to fix what is going on. Therein lies a major problem.

In my opinion, the Muslims, whether fundamentalists/radicals or whatever else want the whole world to follow their beliefs; for everyone to join in with them and become followers of Islam. Well, sorry....I for one won't be doing so; and they can all go and whistle Dixie...or Waltzing Matilda!

    Thanks for coming by.
