CH...CH…CH…CHANGES!

David Bowie sang about it, and achieved it, time and time again. A leopard won’t do it, no matter what. Some say it’s inevitable. Others say we should welcome it. Many don’t want it, and would rather stick in the mud.

There’s nothing wrong with change if it’s in the right direction,” mused Winston Churchill.

And then, Lao Tzu came up with one that was a bit of a conundrum just to confuse us (pun intended…did you get it?)- Quote: “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading”! This one makes me scratch my head! What if where you’re heading IS the right direction? Did he consider that scenario?

And, of course, old Benjamin Franklin had to put the kybosh on everything by thoughtlessly sprouting – “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished!” Didn’t he ever read “The Power of Positive Thinking”?

Freud changed our attitudes towards the family couch.

Jung came along shortly thereafter to alter what we thought of Freud’s changes by consciously advising us how to unconsciously change our dreams.

Dylan reckoned the times were a-changing; we all listened intently and began to change our minds about a lot of things.

The Who were determined to change when they belted out “Won’t Get Fooled Again”!

Boyz ll Men fought against change when they discovered “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”! So did the Kinks because they went “All Day and All of the Night” without a change in the beat!

Cream wanted to change colour so they entered the “White Room”!

The Rolling Stones achieved complete “Satisfaction”, so obviously they didn’t want to change. The Doors suffered from the winter chill and asked us to light their fire!

Some think change is as good as a holiday, but that not always the case. Some holidays can be failures!

Is the key to change hanging off my key ring, I wonder?

Does one really change? I mean....deep within...does one change within? I don't think so. We grow - we mature - we learn as we walk life's path, but our inner self remains the same. I know mine has. I can't and won't speak for others.

Is the Wind of Change one’s destiny or just seasonal?

  1. Lee,

I think that life is all about change.

Old Ben Franklin was right “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished!” I think what he meant was, when you stop changing you die.

Think about those poor old people in convalescent hospitals, the only change for them is for medication or an occasional visitor.

I keep trying to learn new things. To keep fresh and keep my mind active.

  2. Oh! I learn new things every day, Janice.

But I'm still me...inside there is a Lee that dwells who has changed little since she was a little child....that doesn't mean that there have been changes along the way...but the core remains the same.

  3. I like the 100 year old man who said "I've seen a lot of changes in my life...and I've been agin everyone of them."
The US is going through a lot of changes for another two years but it will be over then.

  4. One could say similar about here, Cliff...only ours, hopefully, will start this year!

  5. Lee,
Change, insidious change; but that's a topic for another time.
As you are probably aware, the american actress Rue McClanahan died last week and I was intrigued by a quote of hers remembered from an 1985 interview where-in she was taliking about the TV series "The Golden Girls."
"that when people mature, they add layers," she told The New York Times in 1985. "They don't turn into other creatures. The truth is we all still have our child, our adolescent, and your young woman living in us."
I couldn't help but recall this when reading your next to last paragraph.
A maple tree is always a maple tree from seedling to fire-wood but along the way we percieve the physical changes. We are always human but as we grow, subtle changes occur with each turn of the wheel of time.
And so it is; if we won't/don't turn, we'll end up where we are going. ;)

  6. Yes, Rel...."They don't turn into other creatures. The truth is we all still have our child, our adolescent, and your young woman living in us." That's my point exactly!

I wish I'd said it like that!

  7. It is sometimes a pity we can't change our inner core a bit, I have done things I would prefer not to have done as I'm sure most of us have.

  8. Sure, me too, Peter...but there's no point crying over spilled milk as the saying goes...what is done is done and cannot be undone. Just have to make an effort not to do similar again...and again...and again...and again.... ;)

  9. Hi Lee ~~ A thought provoking post
and I agree, we basically don't change, and still feel the same inside, although we do not look or act the same as we did when younger.
Sorry I complained about the cold, as I have heaters and an electric
blanket and plenty of warm clothes.
I feel for those who have none of these things. Take care my friend.
    Love, Merle.

  10. Hey! Don't apologise, Merle. I can afford to be cavalier in my comments living up here in sunny Queensland! I'm sitting here bare-footed as I type! ;)

  11. Hi Lee
An interesting post with some wonderful quotes. I do think we remain essentially that same person throughout life which is in effect to be true to one oneself. But I also think our life philosophy can change with new ideas and learning so that hopefully we also become somewhat wiser in later life. That wisdom might also give rise not to take oneself too seriously just as others are apt to do likewise.
    best wishes

  12. CHANGE That is what obama used for his campaign and nothing has changed. He is a media whore as he has been on tv more than any president we have ever had and he says the same thing over and over. Which is vertual nothing. Just listen careful to his speeches. His change was very over rated as nothing has changed in DC.
So in a nutshell I guess change as a word could be overrated.
Maybe staying the same is not so bad no matter what the case may be. Peace

  13. Hi there Lindsay...."hopefully" being the operative word! ;)

Hi Lady Di...I hear you loud and clearly! :)

  14. I like change...sometimes. When I want to change direction I do, but when the Universe changes things for me, that's a different matter.

However, I do agree that the essence of each of us probably doesn't change over time. Our outlook might, our minds do, but the innate sense of us doesn't.

However, if we didn't change, we'd stop growing in maturity, mental strength, et cetera so I guess the whole thing is to keep us on our toes...

  15. Change is good. Without it, we stagnate. I know people who simply can't tolerate change, and I always wonder about them. A healthy mind revels in change, if you ask me.:)

  16. Hi Robyn and Serena....I've been known to change my mind...usually about what I'm going to cook for dinner! (Or not cook for dinner)!
