For quite a while I was without a printer because the one I had went on strike...called it a day, refusing to lift a finger...figuratively speaking. (And, a couple of weeks ago, my electric kettle, which I’ve had for over 22 years, went out in sympathy. It decided to pull the plug! It had belonged to my late brother, Graham. For that reason, I will not throw it away.)
Having no desire to battle the hustle and bustle of the nearby Gold Coast, or the city of Brisbane, I never go off the mountain, preferring to shop locally. I’m the perfect “lock-down” candidate. You’ll get no complaints from me about having to remain within my own, by personal choice, boundaries.
My “footprint” on this earth is very small, indeed, even if I do take Size 11 in footwear. Well, I am... or used to be...a fraction less than 5ft 9-inches tall. If my feet were any smaller, I’d topple over! As happens, with the passing years, and with me, naturally, getting older because of those passing years, I’m sure I’ve shrunk in height a little. My feet haven’t shrunk in length, though,
If I’m unable to purchase what I need locally, I jump online. My fingers do the driving and walking. I don’t literally “jump on line”. That would be careless. If I jumped online, I would then need a new keyboard. Jumping on one’s keyboard is not advisable. It’s destructive. If I tried, I’d fall off my desk, for sure!
A few weeks ago I purchased a new, competitively-priced printer from always friendly, helpful Brendan, and his crew at our local Post Office, which is situated in North Tamborine..a lengthy.4.4kms from where I dwell!
I’m very pleased with my purchase. In addition to my satisfaction with my new printer, to purchase it I didn’t need a border pass, nor was I required to have my Visa extended. ..pluses every which way!
How things have changed over the years...as has the exterior me!
In late 1979 I was in awe of my new-beaut electronic word processor. My then husband, now late ex, Randall, began his/our real estate agency, a business we operated from our office, which we set up on the lower level of our Sunshine Beach home. He was the salesman – and a damn good one - while I attended to the secretarial duties, and property management.
My newfangled, fancy-dancy word processor was the ant’s pants. The modern technology was exciting. Daily...and into the evenings, I was content to be glued to my word processing typewriter with a memory bank almost as good as mine...almost!
The word-processor was a huge...a massive...leap forward from the manual typewriters on which I’d learnt to type at high school when I was doing my commercial (shorthand, bookkeeping and typing) course. When I commenced working as a legal secretary the law firm’s typewriters were about on par with the ones as those at high school...maybe a little more modern...just a little.
In April, 1998, I relocated to Gympie after 33 years living and working in various areas throughout Queensland...south, north, east, west, and central.
My first computer entered my life in mid-1998. Some would, and could say, I was a “late starter”. Actually, I needed a fair bit of convincing re the computer.
During one of my visits to my ex, who was living on the Gold Coast...I didn’t mind driving distances back then, day and/or night...and, I often did... he insisted on giving me his computer, telling me that I “had to get with the times!”
Randall had purchased a new one for himself. Rather than sell his older, but still good PC, he ignored my protestations. He packed up the computer, put it in my car, and back home it went with me. I was glad he won that argument.
I no longer had need for my portable typewriter that had travelled far and wide with me. It had been my constant companion.
I’d be lost without my computer, and the Internet, the memory bank of which is by far more extensive than mine! But, then, in all fairness, my computer is much younger than I am!
It’s not the same one I was given in 1998, in case you’re wondering....

Interesting recipes - I think I will take the lemon bars - minus the coconut. Do you have any recipe for Swedish meatballs? Seriously.

Except where books and plants are concerned I have almost total sales resistance.
ReplyDeleteI will however admit that I was lost when we were PCless for a week or so when our old one was replaced.
The internet has successfully (and mostly positively) invaded my life.
Hey, EC...I'm not sure what you mean by "almost total sales' resistance"...as I didn't write about sales...only mentioning purchasing what I needed! :)
DeleteA new electric kettle was a necessity...not a luxury. Similar applied to the printer. Being on a limited budget...as in being solely dependent on the Aged Pension, I do look for the best price for the best product suitable to my purse and needs.
I'd be lost without the internet...and I'd be lost without my TV. I love watching good documentaries, good movies and good series.
Take care...thanks for coming by. :)
I used to think I'd be lost without my computer, but I'm online a lot less these days. I limit myself to afternoons mostly, because if I don't cook, shop, clean etc before lunch things just don't get done around here. And the cleaning extends to helping elderly neighbours, thankfully only a couple of them, but the cleaning usually involves a kitchen and/or bathroom.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely view from your old home.
Why does my comment read 10:05 pm? It's 3:40pm here. Surely you aren't 6 and a half hours ahead of us?
ReplyDeleteFirstly, your computer shows that time, River, because when the guy who set up my PC it was set up on US time...and I've never bothered to alter it. And, he has left this area to go and live in NZ. Paying someone to come and change the time, to me, seems a waste of money...and time. The incorrect time no big problem; so far it hasn't caused me any problems, anyway. The time shown at the bottom of my monitor is correct...and that is all that matters to me. :)
DeleteI would be lost without my computer. I would hate to be without it. I do everything in the mornings, too....after that my time is my own to utilise at my pleasure and discretion.
Thanks for coming by....I hope all is well. :)
We're all addicted to the computer and its auxiliary devices, and rightly so,. It has changed our life in many ways.Enjoy your new printer!
ReplyDeleteYour food items look very appetizing! Great recipes!
G'day, DUTA...I have a couple of friends who don't have computers...and it seems so strange in this day and age...but it is their choice. They are elderly...older than I am so I guess it is understandable.
DeleteMy computer is a good friend of mine! :)
Thanks for coming by...take care. :)
I remember how happy I was when the word processor came along. No more white out was needed. We certainly have come a long way from that now and until I left the working world, I stayed up to date on the latest tech that was out there. Now that my life is smaller and keeping up is not necessary, all the constant changes that come along are annoying and too much for my retired mind.
ReplyDeleteG'day, Arleen. Yes! What a wonder the word processor was!! I fell in love with mine immediately. It made things so much easier. It was a pleasure to be typing! lol
DeleteThe constant changes annoy me, too. Some are unnecessary, in my opinion....done more as money-makers than necessities. I hate change!
Thanks for coming by...take care. :)
Your post sure takes me back! I learned to type on one of those old black typewriters and packed away I still have my word processor. I guess I don't need that word processor anymore, do I! I do enjoy having the world opened up to me by the computer and internet.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your sweet cats are well Lee!
Hi Bonnie...I don't know what happened to my word processor. I imagine I probably sold it when I left the coast to go up to Hinchinbrook Island. I can't remember. I know I always had a portable typewriter with me...at home...when I was living in the north, and when I moved back to Gympie, when the the computer came into my life.
DeleteAll is well here with me and my two furry housemates, Bonnie...I hope similar applies to you and Tom...and your loved ones. Take care. :)
dh is 6'2" with size 9 1/2, ham balls never ever heard of them, lemon bars, yummy, my laptop is on it's last legs, it's about 12 or more years, so did last quite some time, Bonkers broke the M so I have to press several times to get it to work, and scrolling down won't work any longer
ReplyDeleteAnd, now..you have heard of ham balls, Linda! :)
DeleteTell Bonkers to get his own laptop!! Shama, my female cat enjoys walking across my keyboard. Sometimes there is a battle going on between us who gets to use it!
Take care...thanks for coming by. :)
I did computer programming as a subsid subject post grad back in the '60s but by the late '70s early '80s not having used the basic knowledge my 11? year old son taught me to program in Basic. And I've never looked back so fas as using computers etc is concerned. I love them. I'd be bereft without them. Having said that I also write dozens of letters using (one at a time!) my dozens of fountain pens.
ReplyDeleteHey, Graham. How things have changed in the computer world since the 60s. It was the blind leading the blind with me as I battled my way through at the beginning of it all...which was, for me, as I've written, in the late 90s.
DeleteI'd be lost without a computer...I'd hate to be without a computer and access to the internet.
Fountain pens...what wonderful objects they are...biros ruined penship The written word...written using a fountain pen can not be matched.
Take good care...thanks for coming by. :)
I remember word processors. SILVERHILLS was originally typed on a typewriter. Thank goodness for computers.
ReplyDeleteI felt very proud and up-to-date when I got my new word processor. I loved it!
DeleteThanks for coming by, Sandra...take care. :)
I associate printers with always going wrong! so frustrating. I guess word processors were worse, I'm sure I couldn't manage with one today! Oh, that onion tart looks fine. Your blog often gives me ideas for supper!
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny...my previous printer I'd had for a number of years. It served me fairly well.
DeleteI experienced no problems with the word processor. It made office life/work so much easier.
Take good care...thanks for coming by. :)
Our house is allergic to printers and kills them after one use. Every time we have gotten a printer for any computer in this house, whether a new printer or a slightly used one, it has worked one time and then refused to ever work again. So we say the house is allergic and destroys them, and if we need printing done, we find a way to do so out of the house.
ReplyDeleteIf for no other reason than that i have very much enjoyed knowing you, i am glad you got that computer, and wish you great good luck with your new printer.
Hi, messymimi...that's such a nice thing to say...thank you very much. :)
DeleteThat is weird about printers. I'd contact Stephen King if I were you...he might have the answer! :)
My previous printer I'd had for quite a while.
Take care,,,thanks for coming by. :)
I'm battling with a new printer myself right now. I'm going to have to wait for a grandchild to come and deal with it for me. That's like admitting I'm doolally so have put off asking for help for weeks. I remember how I loved my little word processor, what a relief it was after the old thumper typewriter.
ReplyDeleteHey there, Pauline. When I first set-up the new printer it had be a little confused, but I soon worked it out. It's a Canon, as were my two previous printers.
DeleteYep! The new-beaut word processors were such a leap forward. When they came into our lives...things were suddenly much simpler! :)
Take good care...thanks for coming by. :)
Like you, my experiences with typewriters and computers spanned all sorts of technologies. My first typewriter probably weighed 20 pounds. Then there was a portable Smith Corona during my college years, my first electric typewriter. Later I went on to work on a "Mag Card" typewriter that you inserted magnetic cards into which typed part of the document for you. Also had a Commodore 64 with a word processing program.
ReplyDeleteSorry to drone on, but you brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for that.
There are so many people who won't even try to use a computer - I'm glad you did or we wouldn't all be here blogging and meeting new people.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason we always need a printer even if only used 1/2 dozen times a year.
Well that kettle lasted a long time, mine is 7 years old - how do I know?
Took a photo of it and a toaster when purchased and found the photo a day ago..
Take care.
The onion tart and lemon-coconut bars sound like the purrfect meal. Now I'm hungry:)
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at that food I gained 10 pounds and must now go exercise!
ReplyDeleteHey, Tabor. I have had so much going on here of late....or not going on...I've lost my appetite....I'm surviving on fruit and yoghurt mostly at the moment.
DeleteTake good care...thanks for coming by. :)
A group response to Dave, Margaret, and Sandra...
ReplyDeleteThe past few days (and past few weeks) have been very stressful for me. I've been fighting an unwinnable battle with Telstra. It should not be so difficult to communicate with a communication company!!!!
I'm sick of hanging on to the phone for hours to eventually speak (or type online) with someone in the Philippines or India who do not have a very good command of the English language, who give very little useful assistance!!
Then on Wednesday 28th October...out of the blue...my phone line was disconnected, meaning I have had no phone access (I do not have a mobile/cell phone...the reception in this little cabin is useless)....I have had no internet, and no access to streaming services. In other words...I have not been able to have contact with the outside world, or the outside world with me!! This stressful situation is all because of the effing NBN...which I have not asked for...and was told about 10 days ago by another person in India, that I didn't have to worry about the NBN changeover until 6/6/2021. That nothing would change for my set-up until 6/6/2021. As far as I know...and I could be wrong, of course...it is, as I type, 31st October, 2020!!!
I have been a Telstra customer since before the Last Supper. I always have my account/bill paid in advance. It is always paid up well before I receive the account via email....and I always pay more than that owed. Right now, Telstra's bill isn't due until 6th November...I paid it the week before last...and paid more than what was due. So Telstra have MY money as well!!! I wonder if they will remimburse me for the time without phone access, etc., and distress their idiotic actions are causing me!!!
Below is an explanation I have written elsewhere.
Since Wednesday I have been without a phone, the internet and access to streaming services. Telstra in their "infinite wisdom" disconnected my telephone line!!! I am going out of my mind with anxiety. I ‘ve spent hours since then using the generosity of others...their time, and their phones. One of those who have tried to assist was a local business who allowed me to use their phone on Thursday...for hours...as I TRIED to talk with someone at Telstra...to no avail!!! I was TRYING to get some sense out all of this; trying to ask Telstra to fix something they had no right to do!. It is to do with the effing NBN. What Telstra has done is wrong. I have no one to help me with this...and after many hours waiting on hold...I finally spoke to someone in India yesterday (at the home of neighbours who opened up their hearts, home and phone to me for about three hours as I tried to get someone to answer my call. I’m sick of the music played on the line while you wait...and wait...and wait......The guy in India...not Australia....made an appointment for a technician to come to sort this MAJOR problem out for me...but that won't occur until 9th November!!!! In the meantime, I MIGHT have access to the net (after some wise advice given to me by my neighbour up the end of this lane)...as shaky as that seems at this moment (6.43 am). Fingers crossed...which is making typing difficult!! The phone is still not working, and won’t be until the technician arrives on 9th Nov.,..if he does arrive!! I am in a state of high anxiety...stressed out...sick in the stomach...not sleeping well. My Indian mate was helpful...thankfully....I’d had more than enough of not receiving help and a sympathetic ear. He has organised for an interim mobile phone to be sent to me. If I’m lucky it will arrive on Monday. Mobile phone reception inside this very humble little abode which I haunt is hopeless. To make calls and to receive them I have to go outside, which is not very comfortable for someone who has problematic hips and uses a walking stick...Knowing the luck I am having lately I’ll probably lock myself out!!!!
Thanks Dave, Margaret, Sandra and Tabor for coming by...take good care, one and all. :)
Those computers are part of our history as well. I typed many papers on the old typewriter. Would not even attempt it now.
ReplyDeleteOUr first computer was an Apple 2E, 1982. 48K of Ram!
Hi Susan....We've taken giant steps forward....and yet, with many of the problems I've been experiencing these past few weeks...it would seem we've taken quite a few backwards, too!
DeleteThanks for coming by...take good care. :)
Enjoyed your post. I still have the electric typewriter I got in college. I haven't used it in years, but it's really got a piece of my heart.
ReplyDeleteI'm late in reading your comment, Buttercap...but better late than never.
DeleteThanks for calling by....don't be a stranger. You will always be welcome. :)
Lemon-Coconut Bars sound very good :)
