ANOTHER TEARDROP FALLS....

Other than stubbing a toe, or toes, slamming a door on a finger or peeling onions, there are many things that cause a monsoon to emanate from my eyes!

For the past couple of weeks the cause of my flowing tears...and they have been flowing freely without embarrassment...has been the awe-inspiring achievements by the Paralympics athletes.  One and all they take my breath away.  The Paralympics should be made compulsory viewing for the young thugs who spend their time terrorising others...stealing cars, breaking into businesses and homes...those, with no concern for others...who cause mayhem and distress.  The Paralympics should be compulsory viewing for thugs of every age.  Much is to be learned from the athletes...about the strength of the human spirit.  The determination to be the best one can be despite the obstacles one has to face is shown by every athlete participating in the Games.  They are heroes.  Their feats of courage, of purpose, their special achievements show great courage and strength.

Watching the athletes leave me more than just misty-eyed and in awe. Their performances make me speechless (something that doesn’t happen often even though I live alone – I do talk to myself – often (and answer) – and to my two furry rascals equally as often. They answer me as well…so it’s a pretty gabby household on all accounts.

Other causes of my tears....A song; a sad movie; a happy movie; a book; animal documentaries; man’s inhumanity to man; man’s inhumanity to animals: the soaring voice of Pavarotti; a beautiful sunset or sunrise; some trips down memory lane; an unexpected kindness; insensitive remarks; anger; frustrating people; inspirational people and moments. The list goes on and on - at this rate, it sounds like I’m crying all the time! There's never a drought around here!

To name but a few, movies such as “Little Women”, “Out of Africa”, “The Way We Were”, “Message in a Bottle”, “P.S. I Love You” and “The Notebook” (also, the endings of “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” and “Roman Holiday”, of course.  The latter two movies I’ve seen a million times), for instance, cause an avalanche of tears - no light precipitation there; more like the monsoon season.

With clarity, I remember the first time I watched the movie, “Imitation of Life” starring Lana Turner, Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner. The year was 1959. My mother and I one Tuesday night went off to Gympie’s Olympia theatre to view it...on a school night. Once my tears began to flow, they couldn’t be dammed. (It was I who was damned!) It was such a sad, sad movie! Walking home, still distressed, I cried all the way,

I’m sure you, like me, have slunk out of the movies desperately trying to hide red, swollen eyes.

Unfortunately, I viewed both “Beaches” and “The Horse Whisperer” at afternoon matinees!! I’ll never fall into that trap again!  I’ve not been to a public cinema in years, preferring to shed my tears in the privacy of my four walls.

My Nana, who was a gentle, calm lady of Scottish heritage always said: “We, in this family pee out of our eyes!” Oh! Dear! I fear what she said is true…in my case, anyway!

Where was I? Oh, yes…tears...back to onions.  Wipe those tears from your eyes…use a very sharp knife for chopping onions, peel under water (the onions, not you).  The best idea is to store onions in the fridge crisper. When cooking in restaurants etc., I learned very early on to keep my supply of onions in the cold room.  If not, I would have been howling all the way through my shifts!

Onion & Artichoke Salad: Place 3 finely-diced red onions in a bowl, cover with boiling water; stand 10 minutes (the onions, that is!). Drain, rinse under cold water and drain on absorbent paper. Combine 1/3rd cup caster sugar and 1/3rd cup red wine vinegar, 1tsp salt and cracked black pepper to taste in a bowl. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add drained onions and chopped tomatoes. Stir to combine; stand for at least 2 hours (you can sit). Stir in 400g can drained, quartered artichoke hearts; cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.  Before serving, add some black olives and chopped feta, if desired.

Stuffed Onions: (Or Stuff the Onions): Preheat oven to 176C (350F). Slice about a half inch off the top off 4 onions. Hollow out a bowl shaped space to hold about 1/4 cup filling. Slice enough off the bottom to let onions stand upright. Place in baking pan.  Combine 2tbs honey, 1/2c finely-chopped walnuts, 1/2c wheat germ or breadcrumbs, 1/2tsp salt. 1/4tsp pepper, 2tsp Dijon mustard, and 1tbs red wine vinegar, Place about 1/3 cup of water around onions. Bake 30 minutes, adding water, 1/4 cup at a time if needed. Stuff onions with prepared filling; bake another
30 minutes or until softened. Garnish with chopped Italian parsley Serve warm.   (You can add chopped bacon or pancetta and grated mozzarella, if desired...go wild!)

  1. I've seen Beaches, and cried, but haven't seen any of the other movies. I didn't watch the Paralympics either. I'm watching my way through Lucifer instead.

    1. Hi River. "Beaches" was very sad. I saw it one afternoon when I was living in Yorkeys Knob...in North Queensland. When I got home, I sat out on my back verandah and cried all over again as I reflected on what I'd just seen! My tears flowed! lol

I'm surprised you've not seen any of the other movies I mentioned herein. "Little Women" I've seen a million times; and that began when I was a little kid. I loved the movie...still do...and I love the books, still do.

"Lucifer" can wait...he'd be hanging around on streaming for a while yet. He's not going anywhere...but the Paralympics won't be around for much longer, finishing up in a couple of days.

In my opinion...the competitors deserve recognition...and to be watched. Ho However,as I said..that's just my opinion. And I can only speak on behalf of my own self. The athletes put so much work...many years of hard work...into what they do...what they achieve. Achieving so much more than able-bodied, able-minded persons can. They have my admiration...in spades.

Thanks for coming by...take good care. :)

  2. Many a movies I’ve got tears sitting and sniffing on my own as husband watches Netflix in the family room, I watch in the lounge room as we don’t necessarily like the same movies or TV shows.
Those Olympic’s are just amazing with the athletes, very dedicated humans.

  3. I was thrilled to learn that the Paraolympians are to receive the same financial rewards as the other Olympians this time. About time too.
I watch almost no movies but will freely admit to crying over books. Sometimes (having read the book before) several pages before the precipitating event.

    1. Yes...it is very good news about the funding, EC. I was happy to hear that news, too. It is about time.

I'm a movie and series fan, as you know...and a book fan, too...and a weeper over each one! lol I also am known to watch and read each more than once.

Thanks for coming by...take good care. :)

  4. I have to own up to being lacking here. I did not watch even a minute of the Olympic games, able bodied or para. When I was young I played sport and enjoyed it, but have never been a fan of watching it. I much prefer to get outdoors. Your onion and artichoke salad looks really delicious. I might give that a try.

    1. Each to their own, David. We all have our own individual preferences etc.

These para-athletes are so very inspiring...many lessons can be learned from them...in my opinion. They way they face their challenges...tackle their challenges...leaves me in total awe.

Thanks for coming by...take care. :)

  5. Unlike you, I don't shed tears easily, even not at a funeral.
I was advised not to keep open, sliced onions in the fridge, as they might get toxic. Sounds rather strange, but I usually make immediate use of the onions and don't need refrigeration.

    1. G'Day, DUTA...I'm a sook and freely admit it. The power of the human spirit - the strength of purpose of some never fails to stir my emotions. The Paralympic competitors are admirable human beings.

I wasn't referring to open, sliced onions...but to unpeeled onions. Keeping unpeeled onions in the fridge or cold room certainly does stop the tears from flowing when cutting/chopping/dicing them. As was told in the past - many years ago...leaving peeled, cut onions out in the open (or in the fridge for that matter) is not a good, healthy practice. It's something I never do, or never have done.

      This may answer the question....https://www.bodyandsoul.com.au/nutrition/nutrition-tips/are-cut-raw-onions-the-secret-poison-sitting-in-your-fridge/news-story/3f6b84e432e2ae2ade77574d2ad47b53

Having the onions cold before the peeling and slicing somehow stops the sulfuric acid irritating the nerves around our eyes.

  6. I don't get teary-eyed often but I recall Titanic had me misty-eyed and a little embarrassed to leave the theatre. I've always been interested in seeing Breakfast at Tiffany's and watched it for the first time within the past month or so. I didn't realize Audrey Hepburn was so beautiful.

I agree that the Paralympics should have had more prominent coverage on TV. They kept profiling the local athletes on the local news but I never could catch the events themselves on TV.

By the way, it seemed like Australia collected their fair share of medals in the Olympics.

Hope you're keeping healthy and well there. Say hello to your cats for me.

    1. Hi Dave...I'm so glad you finally got around to watching "Breakfast at Tiffany's" I love that movie so much...have seen it often and have it recorded permanently on the set-top box. I've adored Audrey Hepburn from when I was a kid and saw her for the first time...the first time of many times...in "Roman Holiday". I've got it permanently recorded, too. She was stunning. She was so beautiful...both inside and out. A wonderful person she was. A humanitarian, for many, many years she worked closely with UNICEF.

Here, the Paralympics were covered by our Seven Network, and have been appearing on a couple of their channels. The coverage has been very good. Our Aussies have been doing well. The interviews have been absolutely great...lots of fun. There are some characters...their sense of humour, friendship and care for those around them is evident at all times.

Remy and Shama said "G'day!" backatcha! :)

All is well here with me, thanks. Take good care...thanks for coming by. :)

  7. I agree with you about the Paralympics. We can all learn so much from them. I love the older movies and yes, there are many tear jerkers! Your stuffed onion sure sounds and looks good, I may have to try that one. Give my love to your sweet, furry house mates! Take care!

    1. Hey there, Bonnie. We certainly can learn a lot from those competing in the Paralympics. Learning about their backstories rips my heart out...but, at the same time, makes me so very proud of them...and of their loved ones. Incredibly inspiring stories...incredibly inspiring humans.

Thanks for coming by...take good care. :)

If you don't cut into the root end of the onion, there's less crying, i find.

    1. G'day, Sandra...the para athletes certainly do deserve mountain-loads of praise and admiration. They need the highest of praise...non-stop.

Also hearing what they have to say...learning about their backstories is heart-stopping...inspiring. The challenges they've had to overcome are unimaginable to able-bodied folk. They are legends one and all. Oh! The tears I have shed over the past couple of weeks...such pride I have felt, and feel about each and every one of them.

Thanks for coming by....take good care. :)

  11. While I did not watch any of the Olympics on TV, it's only because we do not subscribe to any service. That said, I did read and watch online accounts and agree with you on how amazing it is to see the para olympic athletes. Unlike able-bodied athletes, they had to overcome much more to get to where they are champions.

The tip about keeping onions chilled to prevent tearing up was timely as I read a similar tip earlier today.

    1. Hi Beatrice...Here in Aussie-land the Paralympics were on our free-to-air Channel 7 network. It was wonderful, inspiring viewing.

I cooked in restaurants etc., for many years, and learned early on about storing onions in the cold room. Having to chop dozens of onions per day, per service...it certainly was the most handiest of tips. Saved me a lot of tears, that's for sure!! lol
